How to Repair an External Hard Drive?

External hard drives are mechanical devices designed today with the most sophisticated technology. Like good machines, they are sensitive to failure at any time and for different reasons, hard drives are sensitive to wear or severe damage if the correct care is not taken in handling them.

Reasons why an External Hard Drive May Fail

One of the main reasons why an external hard drive fails is because it had some physical damage caused by a blow to the unit, this may be due to being mishandled while it is being installed. Other reasons for a hard drive to fail is because they have hardware or memory errors.

It can also happen that a hard drive is damaged as a result of a software virus attack. Other causes are the incorrect operation of the hard disk such as not disconnecting the device from the computer safely or also file system errors.

There are a wide variety and types of external hard drives on the market, although most are used for the same purpose, which is to store information, all of them must be cared for in the same way so that their functions and operability are the most optimal.

Act According to the Different Failures

Once it has been detected that the hard drive is failing, it is best to stop using it and proceed to diagnose what is happening with its operation. The first thing to do is disconnect it from the computer where it is usually used and connect it to another PC.

F If, after connecting it and testing it on another computer, the external hard disk works, the problem is not the device, but the port or the cables of the PC where the hard disk was usually used. The simplest solution to this problem is to replace the old cables or ports.

In certain cases when an external hard drive does not work in a computer (but it does in others) the failure may be due to the PC motherboard having problems. If you can make the external hard drive work on any other PC, then the problem is with the computer where you work daily.

There are other simple reasons why an external hard disk is not recognized, among these reasons could be named, for example, that the hard disk has not been assigned the correct letter or that the clusters (clusters) or the boot sector are having damaged.

A simple way to check the operability of the external hard drive without having to go to a specialist external hard drive recovery services providerfrom the first moment is to carry out the following test:

  • Right-click on “My Computer” and select the “Manage” option.
  • When the window displays, click on “Device Manager”.
  • The third step is to locate “External Hard Drive” in that menu. This step is relatively simple because from the first moment the disk is connected, the equipment (computer) assigns a letter to the external device.
  • Then, right-click on the letter of the disk and mark the format option
  • As it is a hard disk, the NTFS format will be chosen, since it has a high format capacity.
  • Next, click on “continue” and at the end of the process the external device should already work correctly.

Another simple solution that will allow you to repair the external hard drive and at the same time recover the data stored on it is to use some Windows commands. This procedure runs as follows.

  • Connect the failed external hard drive to the computer.
  • Then execute the Windows commands by clicking on the start bar “Search programs and files” (if you have Windows 10, go directly to the search bar). There you must write “cmd” and proceed with the execution.
  • Once the console is displayed, the screen will be black. At this point you should write “chkdsk” and the letter that corresponds to the external memory disk, which will also be followed by a colon. An example “chkdsk e:”.
  • Then click “Enter”. It is very important that before carrying out this option it is verified that you have the administrator permissions. The recommended thing in this case is to simply run the function with the administrator’s permission (right button and “Run as administrator”).
  • The system will automatically analyze the external device and issue a report on its operational status. This alternative could be done before having to format the external hard drive.

In the event that the external hard drive failure is due to boot sector failures, repair should be done as follows:

  • Once defective sectors are detected by the system, it will automatically proceed to repair the stored files. You will have to write the letters “chkdsk” plus the letter corresponding to the device (for example, chkdsk / F). The PC will go back to verify all the sections and will repair those that are in bad condition.
  • Then go to the PC menu and check that the external hard drive has been repaired and allows access to all stored data.

Use Recovery Software

If the above steps didn’t work, don’t lose your cool because luckily there are other methods to repair an external hard drive. There is different external hard drive recovery software, many of which are completely free that will help both to repair the device and also to recover the data stored on it. One of the most practical and simple ways to have a reference or access to these programs is to start a quick search on Google to locate them.
