Online Marketing And How It All Started

The internet was invented originally as a means of sending electronic mails and exchanging information. But today, there are now many things that you can do online and in the cloud. You can shop, pay, watch movies, play games, and even start a business online. There are even some people that started their way to being millionaires through the World Wide Web.

What is was before

It was not until one company in the United States, CompuServe, in 1979 that the era of online marketing awareness started. The company paved the way to providing the very first major service relating to the internet by providing technical help for those users of personal computers. However, it was not until the early 1990’s that businesses began to notice and acknowledge the obvious and great potential of the internet to boost their sales and businesses. Thus, Bristol-Myers Squibb, a US-based drug company, was the first company to have launched an official online marketing campaign to promote public awareness of the drug, “Excedrin”. After the risky feat, the company garnered approximately 30,000 additional customers.

The same time as the beginning of online marketing, the era of online browsers began, with their predecessor, the Nexus which was the brainchild of Tim Berners-Lee. However, during its first release, the browser did not become as popular as browsers are today. The very first search engine, Archie, was also invented during this time. Sadly, it also did not gain popularity. In fact, it took the releasing of the Mosaic by the National Center of Supercomputing Applications of the University of Illinois, that people began to appreciate web surfing not just for marketing purposes.

Despite the long years of existence, it was not until 2003 that online businesses began to serve ads for users and earn money through these alone, thanks to Google’s launching of its AdWords campaign. Google itself started in 1996.Marketing Today
